U.S. News & World Report publishes annual lists of the best colleges in the United States based on a variety of criteria (such as type of school and degrees offered). While U.S. News ranks business schools based on feedback from business school deans and senior faculty, the publication also breaks down rankings of business school specialties. For students interested in studying logistics and supply chain management, three business schools emerge as the best according to U.S. News: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Michigan State University, and Pennsylvania State University.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
According to U.S. News & World Report surveys, students interested in studying logistics and supply chain management can do no better than the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management. Students can take logistics and management courses toward an SB degree in Management Science, or they may pursue a minor in management or management science.
Students who study management science at MIT can choose to concentrate in one of four areas: finance, information technologies, marketing science, or operations research. Sloan undergraduates often earn starting salaries of between $55,000 and $70,000, a further testament to the value of a Sloan management degree.
Michigan State University
Those surveyed by U.S. News & World Report rank the supply chain management (SCM) major at Michigan State University the second-best such major program in the nation. The SCM major at Michigan State is one of seven available majors in the Broad College of Business.
Students majoring in SCM at Michigan State take a 51 credit business core to give them a broad business background. Students are also required to take six courses specifically in SCM, four of which are required: Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Manufacturing Planning and Control, Logistics and Transportation Management, and Supply Chain Application and Policy.
Pennsylvania State University
The Supply Chain and Information Systems major at Pennsylvania State University holds the third spot on the U.S. News & World Report list of top logistics and supply chain management degrees. Supply Chain and Information Systems is one of seven majors offered by the Penn State’s Smeal College of Business.
Not only does U.S. News consider Smeal’s Supply Chain and Information Systems (SCIS) program to be among the best in the nation, but AMR Research, a global supply chain research firm, also considers Smeal’s program to be the best in the nation in terms of depth of program and industry value. In addition to the undergraduate program in SCIS, Smeal also offer SCIS programs at the master’s, doctoral, and executive education level, including an online professional master’s program.
Whether choosing to major in logistics and supply chain management or another field, a college choice is one of the most important decisions a student can make. In addition to looking at college and program rankings provided by U.S. News & World Report and other publications that rank colleges and degree programs, prospective undergraduates should schedule campus tours and talk with admissions office representatives, in addition to doing independent internet and personal research, to choose the college that is the right fit.
